TUNNEL IN THE SKY

by Russell Miller

This morning, I witnessed one of the most amazing sunrises I had ever experienced. As my wife & I share a single car, I was driving her to work, and as usual on days I need the car;  not fully awake;  just going through the motions …

I was surprised that the sun was limited to a two inch band on the horizon and everything within that band was a bright golden red – the rest of the sky was BLACK.  Since I could only see the sun light filtered through the trees across the street, I figured it must be a bit overcast and the reason it was a bit darker than normal.

As we started driving I realized it was overly dark because it was raining, and the sun was only poking through a small window in the eastern half of the sky.  As is typical in this situation, it made everything glow in that weird, not-of-this-world sort of light. The kind of vibrant light where you have to look at everything because you don’t get to experience it but once in a lifetime.

By the time we arrived at my wife’s work, a full arcing rainbow had developed.  Along with it, a double rainbow was starting to glow on the outside of the arc.  As rainbows do, it had developed 180° opposite the sun – which set it against an almost black sky. This in itself was oddly-strange as I had never seen a rainbow in conditions resembling night time before. As we looked, a few small flickers of lightning were popping off electricity in the far distance … so needless to say: Lightning and a Rainbow = a unique experience!

As I was heading back home, the sun had almost reached its peak before going above the cloud line, and this made the rainbow go to its full intensity. “Neon glow” doesn’t even begin to describe the brightness of this rainbow. Taking particular note of the scene, in the rear view mirror, everything was washed in gold light. Then this super-intense rainbow, glowing brighter and more brilliant than any I had seen before, set itself against this still quite dark background, with occasional lightning flashes.  One of those surreal moments where you feel like you should be taking notes.

Just before the sun disappeared, I could actually see light spilling off the sides of the rainbow (or so it appeared) and lighting up the inside legs of the rainbow more than the outside. It made it look like a tunnel right through the clouds – all lit from the inside.  I could actually see a darker region between the main rainbow and the secondary one, and the intensity of both bows was so bright, I could clearly see the “opposite layering” of the reverse rainbow as I started trying to spell ROY G. BIV backwards in my head to match the secondary rainbows colors.

Very GOD-way to start a hopeful day….
