Miracles don’t seem to happen every day in sports but when your playing your rival team and your down 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning and there are 2 outs and nobody on base you start to lose inspiration.
On September 18, 2006, I can honestly say I saw a miracle with the Los Angeles Dodgers playing there nemesis rival the San Diego Padres. With all hope lost and 55,381 people in attendance, the Dodgers seemed to be beaten.
Then God started working in BASEBALL! A homerun from Jack Kemp started the Rally that would go down in History, and I am proud to have been apart of that phenomenal experience. With apologies to Jack Buck, we don’t believe what we saw at Dodger Stadium on that fateful day in September.
Three other teams in history had hit four straight home runs in one inning, all of them in a four-year span. The Milwaukee Braves did it in the seventh inning at Cincinnati on June 8, 1961 (Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock, Frank Thomas). The Indians did it in the sixth inning against the Angels on July 31, 1963 (Woodie Held, Pedro Ramos, Tito Francona and Larry Brown) and the Twins did it in the 11th inning at Kansas City on May 2, 1964 (Tony Oliva, Bob Allison, Jimmie Hall and
Harmon Killebrew). So this was surely a great accomplishment for the Dodgers.
I can honestly tell you I became a die hard Dodger Fan after that night, and with the recent sell of the team I am very interested in seeing the Dodgers return to the World Series; a place where they belong and have not been since 1988. With all of the places and things in life that I have seen, “Miracle at Chavez Ravine” remains the #1 on my list.
