Most teens have low or no self-esteem due to various reasons including: a dysfunctional home life or bullying. When you are emotionally, mentally, and verbally abused it can take a toll on your psyche. The good news is you have the power within you to increase your self-esteem. The first step is to find and recognize your self-worth and stop listening to others who put you down. Abusers and bullies have little or no self-esteem which makes them feel the need to pick on others to feel worthy themselves.
If you have low or no self-esteem, think about when you first noticed it. Write down your feelings and thoughts in a notebook or journal. You’ll feel better emotionally, mentally, and physically. Keeping your emotions locked inside of you is not healthy. This is how unease manifests in the body and mind. You have the power within you to change your life for the better.
How to improve your self-esteem
Write down your feelings and thoughts in a journal. Purge your body, mind, and soul of the negativity you have been carrying around with you. Once you fill the pages of your journal, review what you wrote. Think about why you feel the way you do. Is it all in your head? How did your family and home life contribute to your low self-esteem? What about your peers? Get everything out in the open and discuss it with a trusted confidant.
Stop listening to the negative talk from others. Anyone who puts you down or makes fun you has to do so in order to feel good. Believe it or not, some of your peers are not as cool and confidant as they appear to be. Your family members may unknowingly pass onto you what they heard as a child. It’s what I refer to as the “Cyclical Effect.” Have the courage to break the dysfunctional cycle which means you won’t pass it onto your children.
Take a martial arts class. Karate, Judo, Jujutsu, Taekwondo, and Mixed Martial Arts can do wonders for your self-esteem. If you’re feeling angry, these classes can help you channel anger into something positive. Not only will you gain self-confidence and self-esteem, you’ll become emotionally, mentally, and physically fit. These are benefits that will stay will you for the rest of your life.
Join a support group. Believe it or not, you’re not the only teen who has low or no self-esteem. Many teens experience this. Join a group of your peers and talk out your feelings. Guess what? You’ll make new friends along the way! Being surrounded by peers who are experiencing what you’re experiencing eases the pain. Before you know it, your self-esteem will be sky high! Someone who has earned a Christian counseling degree will be able to help you find the right support group for you.
Join a sports team. If you’re athletic, join a sports team and use your God given talents to do something that brings you and others joy. If your school doesn’t have sports teams, look for them within your community. Who knows, you could be the “secret weapon” that they’ve been looking for.
It’s not too late to increase your self-esteem. Take your power back today! Say “No” to low or no self-esteem and “Yes” to a new and improved you. Remember, you’re not an “extra” on planet Earth. There’s a reason why you’re here – you just have to figure out your life’s purpose. Here’s a hint: you’re meant to live an abundant and joyous life. You’re not meant to go through life with a defeatist or victim mentally. Shake off whatever is distressing you and start enjoying life. Say “Yes” to life and life will say “Yes” to you!
