It was the party of the year at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 13, 2011! The Music Industry held its annual GRAMMY AWARDS show celebrating music’s best artists. The show was a three hour star studded lineup of performers, interlaced with awards being given out in several categories of music. One of the years biggest stars was Barbara Streisand, who was honored as “Musicares Person of the Year”. She sang a beautiful rendition of her hit “Memory”. Other outstanding performances were by Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, and Lady GAGA who was carried onstage inside a giant egg!
Many of the performers this year were also GRAMMY winners. “Lady Antebellum” performed their hit, “Need You Now” and won five awards, including Record and Song of the Year! Lady GAGA, John Legend, David Frost and Jay Z each won three awards. “Album of the Year” went for the first time to an independent rock band, “Arcade Fire” for their album “The Suburbs”. What a great accomplishment for independent music! A touching segment of the show was the memorial section that gave respect to those in the industry who had passed on in the last year.
The show always has “Lifetime Achievement” awards honoring those who had an entire life of extraordinary work. This year they went to Julie Andrews, Roy Haynes, The Julliard String Quartet, The Kingston Trio, Dolly Parton, The Ramones and George Beverly Shea.
