Super Bowl XLVI (2012) ~ Click Here!
So the Vince Lombardi Trophy returns to Green Bay. After the chicken wing stains have been washed out of our shirts from a month ago, does this matter anymore? Really? Yes, it does. It matters because all games need a return to their roots. The epic battles of grit and determination and overcoming adversity need to be fought and won and their stories need to be told. The U.S. needed a team that could win a game between two perennial powerhouses to engage the nation.
XLV, Superbowl forty-five, is a nice, round number for a reset. Forty-five years ago, Vince Lombardi, one of the most quoted leaders in history for his success, coached the Packers to victory. It fits that this year, they can bring it home and give the nation a repose and a mental break. With all the chaos and uncertainty that is reigning: markets, economy, political upheaval, Lady GaGa’s meat-dress or pointed shoulders, you can relax knowing that hard work, practice, and a Lombardi legacy can be a steady rock in a wavy ebb and flow of football championships. It fits like the regular-fit blue jeans that are a good go-to when skinny-jeans, baggies, chords, or khaki options that are floating around your closet, don’t seem right. If you cannot tell, this is written from the West Coast, where, in the past when the Raiders or Niners weren’t in it, we could just turn the T.V. off and go skiing. This year, there was Aaron Rogers from Chico, CA there, going for it in the heartland of American football, and the story was great: overcoming adversity, years on the bench, in Farvre’s shadow, and now, becoming the best in the game!
Charles Woodson broke his collarbone and Donald Driver got an ankle-sprain. These are two key, defensive Packers players that have carried the team for much of the season and were key players playing together. Even though the Packers were up at the half, they were not out of the woods. The Steelers rallied and regained some footing. The half-time talk would have to be epic-and it was. Charles Woodson had some emotional words with his teammates and explained that they needed to take it over, finish it, and win, and they did.
Key players were out and others had to step into their roles that they were meant to play. It was the whole team winning it. The Karate Kid, Rudy…this was like all the movies you love that show overcoming life’s obstacles through focusing on a goal, even through impossible odds. This could not have been written any better by a Hollywood scriptwriter. We need to see these moments to give ourselves hope that the effort we put forth in our lives is going to pay off! Juice from the chicken wings was flying in excitement. The detergent will get the stains out of the shirt, but the moment will remain and carry us through and over our next challenge.
In today’s American sports climate, there are so many options for participation and viewing. On one hand, there are many avenues for all people to participate in sports and activities of their choice. On the other, our attention has become so diffused, that it is hard to be unified and rallied as a nation around one game or event. In this Steelers versus Packers game, there were facets that made me feel, as a viewer, that this was a special return to times of old, when there were three TV channels, the paperboy delivered the paper to the door and car bumpers were made of steel in Pittsburgh. For example, the halftime show featured current artists and not a showcase of old, played-out, “greatest-hits” artist from bygone rock-and-roll days. The whole game and halftime show were fresh. Green Bay protected the ball and didn’t have any turn-overs. They forced Roethlisberger to throw the ball and play Packers’ ball. There was a little “David Versus Goliath” action in there also, with a dominant, winning quarterback getting slain at the hands of a younger, up-and-coming defense, and a young, Californian quarterback rising up and making a come-out MVP.
These are qualities that the nation can get behind. These are games that matter. Next year, who knows. Perhaps we can go skiing.
