St. Louis Cardinal slugger Albert Pujols joined a big club on Aug. 26 when he slammed home his 400th career home run.

Pujols led off in the top of the fourth. He took a high curve ball for a strike from Washington National’s right hander Jordan Zimmerman before taking a high and outside fastball and depositing it over the wall for an opposite-field home run. He is just the 47th player in Major League history to join that club.

Only two players reached 400 blasts earlier in age than Pujols. Pujols hit 400 at 30 years and 222 days old. Alex Rodriguez hit 400 at 29 years, 316 days and Ken Griffey Jr. did it at 30 years, 141 days.

“It’s a special milestone,” Pujols said. “But I don’t play for numbers.”

Pujols would have traded in the home run if it meant a win. The Cardinals still lost the game in 13 innings. They are six games behind the Cincinnati Reds for the National League Central lead.

Pujols is also battling Reds first baseman Joey Votto for the National League Triple Crown award. The two lead the NL in hits, batting average and home runs.
