By Stephen Fratello

I recently heard a story of a man who lived in Germany. Most of his family had left him to make a better life in America. He was so lonely, and longed to be with them. He decided that, he too, would move to America so he could be close to his family.

He worked all year long to save up enough money to make the trip. He purchased his passport and a ticket. He spent every last dime on that ticket, but it didn’t matter that he was left with nothing – he was so elated to know that he’d be with his family. What he didn’t realize was that the trip would take about 2 weeks. He quickly ran home and found some old change. He had just enough money to buy a case of cheese and crackers to sustain him for the duration of the trip. Again, he felt sorry for himself that he had to eat cheese and crackers for meals, but he just kept a picture of his family in his mind.

Finally, the day had arrived for him to make his trip. He boarded the ship with excitement and anticipation of seeing his family. Day after day, night after night, he watched all the people in the dining area eat delicious and tasty food. He could smell the aroma of spices as he sat alone in the corner eating his cheese and crackers. By the third day, he was sick of his scrappy diet and began to long for a tasty, filling meal. “Oh well,” he said as he sunk down on the stairs and began unwrapping his cheese and crackers. Just then, a man approached him and said, “Sir, I can’t help but notice that every day you sit here eating your cheese and crackers while we are all enjoying the gourmet food in the dining room; why don’t you come and join us?” The man was so embarrassed. He replied, “To tell you the truth, I only had enough money to buy the ticket; I don’t have enough for meals too.” The stranger looked puzzled and with his eyebrow raised, he answered, “Don’t you realize that all this food was included in the price of your ticket?”

How many of us are eating cheese and crackers? How many of us are going without when we have an all-inclusive ticket? The price has been paid.
